The Cope Project is an initiative designed by The Butterfly Foundation and Kieran Sheehan Dance Theatre (KSDT) in response to an ongoing development of a piece of dance called Cope being created by Kieran Sheehan. The Project incorporates three strands: articulating through performance, long term process led participatory work for adults and short term movement and wellbeing sessions for children and adults. Amongst each strand the work will focus on issues experienced by those who have witnessed or experienced domestic abuse of any nature.

Summer 2012:

Members of the Butterfly Foundation will create a live art piece incorporating movement and instillation to be performed before audiences watch a Dance for Camera film. Participants will perform in the dance for camera film devising short solos at the Bourne spring centre which are then re-created in sites around Bournemouth and finally edited by KSDT. The film will last approximately 6 – 8 minutes and the premiere will be incorporated into the live art event in August 2012.

Members of the Youth Offending Service will be given a bursary to create a film and sound response to issues around domestic violence which will be screened during the live art section of the performance. The Butterfly Foundation staff will facilitate a Healthy Relationships workshop as an introduction and a member of KSDT will visit the YOS to support the development of the piece if requested.

The outcomes for the Butterfly Foundation members will be to:

produce a piece of choreography and make an instillation in which to perform their dance pieces.

perform some site specific dance that will be filmed by KSDT

(Daniel Naddafy who plays Asef in rehearsal @ Praxis & TOVT)

KSDT will be exploring the development of Mazloom into a new piece of dance theatre with support from various partners over the summer, soon to be announced. Following this period of research and development incorporating more young people from afghanistan, we will tour a full length production in Spring/Summer 2013.

what’s happened so far:

Shaila Sheikh, Principal Participation Adviser Office of the Childrens Commissioner for England

“Mazloom is an example of how through creative processes these young people have been able to explore and share their
stories and views safely. The end result of the theatre piece is one thing and it should challenge us all to think about the care
and support we provide asylum seekers but we should also recognise the huge value of the creative process as a therapeutic
process.”

Mazloom has been created with and for young male afghan unaccompanied minors living in London. Writer Sara Masters has created Mazloom, the story of their journey to and survival in the UK recently performed as a work in progress at The Old Vic Tunnels. In partnership with Merton Asylum Welcome we have developed the potential for a brand new piece of theatre capturing the human experience of young people from Afghanistan living in London.

8 young people originally from Afghanistan living across South London have spent four months developing ‘Mazloom’ which tells the story of Asef, a 17 year old boy, who has recently been informed that he will be returned to a lawless Afghanistan. The performance aims to give voice to young people who feel that the issues affecting them are largely being ignored. Through conversation and consultation through performance we have developed a 30 minute performance using professional actors and writers as catalysts for the young people feel that their story is told with sensitivity and truthfulness.

LEGACY

On April 4, the play was shown at Freeworld Centre in Farringdon as part of Young People Seeking Safety Week 2012 (http://www.youngpeopleseekingsafety.co.uk/). The group of young people will now go on to meet with Dr Maggie Atkinson, the Children’s Commissioner for England to discuss the issues affecting asylum seeking young people in the UK.

Merton and Wandsworth Asylum Welcome is a charity based in Mitcham which provides targeted support services for refugee, asylum seeking and newly arrived young people across Merton and Wandsworth (asylumwelcome.org.uk).

Young people from across South London have spent four months developing ‘Mazloom’, a theatre production which aims to raise awareness of the issues faced by unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people fearing return to Afghanistan. The group worked closely with Merton and Wandsworth Asylum Welcome and KSDT productions to develop the performance which tells the story of Asef, a 17 year old boy, who has recently been informed that he will be returned to a lawless Afghanistan. The performance aims to give voice to young people who feel that the issues affecting them are largely being ignored.

The play was very well received at its pilot performance at the Old Vic Tunnels on 22 February. On April 4, the play will be shown at Freeworld Centre in Farringdon as part of Young People Seeking Safety Week 2012 (http://www.youngpeopleseekingsafety.co.uk/). The group will now go on to meet with Dr Maggie Atkinson, the Children’s Commissioner for England to discuss the issues affecting asylum seeking young people in the UK. Quote from Asad/Vahid

Young People Seeking Safety Week 2012 is coming! YPSS week is from 30th March to 5th April 2012 and is being celebrated through local events across the UK. YPSS week aims to bring positive local attention to the issues of young asylum seekers; encourage conversation and action across the nation, provide a platform for young people to share their experiences and express their concerns; and act as a showcase for the talents, creativity and diversity of young people seeking safety and those that support them.

YPSS is a network of young people, groups and individuals who support young people seeking safety in our local communities. Many young people seeking safety experience distressing circumstances before and also after arriving in this country. YPSS provides a formal platform for local and national groups across the UK to communicate, meet and work towards ensuring the care and human rights of young asylum seekers in the UK.

YPSS’ first awareness week in 2011 was a resounding success. Across the UK, young people contributed art, photography, film, music and dance to express their experiences of seeking asylum and living in the UK.

Lots of exciting events are already lined up for this year’s YPSS week including live music, panel discussions, exhibitions, and arts collaborations. YPSS week is taking place near you!
